Structural Steel Fabrication

Structural steel is what we do.

Structural steel fabrication has been at the heart of RSS since the beginning.

From a single beam for a residential alteration through to full structural steel packages for large commercial and industrial projects, our workshop is set up to take on a wide range of work.

Our team works from approved shop drawings to fabricate beams, columns, portals, trusses, frames and custom steelwork ready for delivery and installation.

Just as importantly, we stay in contact throughout the job. If we spot something that needs checking or there’s an issue that could affect fabrication or installation, we’d rather pick up the phone and sort it early.

Commercial structural steel

We work with builders, construction companies and engineers on commercial projects throughout Rotorua, the Bay of Plenty and surrounding regions.

Our commercial work includes structural steel frames, portals, columns, beams, trusses, stairs, platforms and other custom steelwork.

Every project is different, so we work closely with the project team to understand the job, programme our work and help keep things moving from fabrication through to installation.

Residential Structural Steel

We also work with builders and homeowners on residential projects of all sizes.

This can be anything from a single beam or lintel through to portals, columns and larger structural steel packages for new homes, renovations and extensions.

Need something a bit different? Talk to us. We also fabricate custom steelwork including gates, handrails and architectural steel.

Custom Fabrication

Not every job fits neatly into a box.

If you’ve got drawings, an idea or a problem that needs a steel solution, send it through.

Our team can work with you to figure out the best way to fabricate it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the structural steel fabrication process?

In essence, steel fabricators use various techniques such as cutting, bending, welding and assembling processes to turn basic steel sections into predefined shapes, ready to be implemented in construction. Fabricators work closely alongside steel detailers and drafters, who provide detailed drawings and designs which fabricators essentially bring to life.

What do structural steel fabricators do?

Structural steel fabricators are skilled professionals who transform raw steel into the components needed for construction projects. They begin by assessing engineering drawings and specifications to determine the exact requirements for beams, columns, and other structural elements. Handling steel relies on specialised equipment to cut and shape the steel to precise measurements, ensuring it fits the design. Fabricators also weld or bolt these pieces together, creating essential structural components like frames, trusses, and supports.

In addition to assembly, fabricators are responsible for quality control, checking measurements, inspecting welds, and testing the strength of the steel. They may also apply protective coatings, such as paint or galvanisation, to safeguard the steel against corrosion. Some fabricators work on-site during installation, ensuring that the steel components are properly aligned and secured in place. Their work is critical to ensuring that the steel structures in buildings are safe, durable, and built to last.
